Cutting - one of the most spectecular classes in
western riding!
It has its origin in the work of the cowboys with cattle.
In
the cattle CUTTING discipline, each rider has two and a half minutes to
go into a herd, select an animal, and then cut it from its herd.
Naturally, the animal will do its best to try and return to the herd,
and often much faster than you would imagine. Since a Quarter Horse
is only suited as a Cutting horse if it has what is known as "cow
sense", i.e. the ability to read a cow, it will anticipate its
every move and cut it off with cat-like nimbleness. The horse will need
to work completely independently. The rider seems to be a mere passenger.
In the given time, the rider must cut at least two animals from the
herd.
