Mallorca Western Festival 2006

The first festival worldwide to combine Reining sport and show in a bullring turned out a fantastic success

From Friday to Sunday Palma de Mallorca’s Plaza de Toros felt like a bubbling cauldron at times. About 10.000 international visitors came to the Plaza de Toros to join the Mallorca Western Festival. The Reining competitions with their record prize-money totalling 200.000 US$, the horse shows of world famous Jean-Francois Pignon from France and Miguel Barrionuevo, master of the Andalusian style of horse riding, along with the hot country and rock music of the groups Texas Lightning and Rednex, brought about an unusually high level of adrenalin in the audience. Especially on Saturday night the bullfighting arena turned into one big party.

The overwhelming success came as a surprise even to Frank Lichte, Director of Event Consulting International. “Of course we had organized a terrific programme and put lots of energy into the promotion of the festival. Nevertheless, on Saturday night I was absolutely stunned by the enthusiasm of the audience.” Lichte’s concept of combining first-rate sport with the world’s best horse shows and live concerts was an absolute hit, yet Lichte says: “We want to improve some details for next year. Catering in the VIP area e.g. did not always convince me, and also the course of the competitions had the odd hitch here and there. We will make sure that this does not happen again.”

Mallorca tourists, horse riding insiders, and Spanish families formed a colourful and ideal mixture. Jose Gonzales, visitor and head of a Mallorcan family of six, is thrilled “It was great. We really felt like being shifted to the Wild West for a while. The sport was fascinating, and the shows, particularly the performance of Pignon, gave me goose pimples. The concert of Rednex right afterwards made my older children completely go bananas. They will be hoarse for a week.”

The outstanding winner of the Lawson Bronce Trophies with the titles of “Mallorca Reining Trophy” and “North-America against the Rest of the World“ was Martin Larcombe from Australia riding the stallion Red Chic Peppy.
Second in both these competitions came World Champion Shawn Flarida (Ohio / USA) with Just Gotta Shine.
The excellent performance of Grischa Ludwig (Germany) on his stallion Coeur D Wright Stuff may have come as a surprise to some as he had to pull out of the World Championships in Aachen due to a lameness issue. In Mallorca he was fit and well again and could demonstrate his potential. In the “Mallorca Reining Trophy“ he scored equal points to Flarida, both finishing second. In the Lawson Trophy on Sunday he came in fourth behind American Kelly Zweifel.

Owing to its great success the Mallorca Western Festival will take place again on the Plaza de Toros in Palma next year. So don’t forget to mark the 20th to 23rd September in your diary right now!

Passionate Andalusian Horse-Show with Miguel Barrionuevo

With Miguel Barrionuevo´s Andalusian Horse-Show another world class artist will join Jean-François Pignon with his Free-Dressage and Ute Holm with her Cutting Performance to enchant the audience within the spectacular supporting programme of the Mallorca Western Festival.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the Plaza de Toros will be glowing from Miguel Barrionuevo´s fiery and passionate mixture of Spanish horsemanship and flamenco.

The Spaniard who achieved enthusiastic applause during the famous Horse Show „Apassionata“, is one of the riders whose supreme style is demonstrating the history of attraction between man and horse.

In 1992 and 1993 Miguel Barrionuevo excelled in the disciplin „Funcionalidad“ being rewarded with the Andalusian Championship title and in 1995 with the Spanish Championship title. The professional from Malaga is internationally recognized as the Ambassador of Equestrian Culture, the „Alta Escuela“ and the „Doma Vaquera“. Miguel Barrionuevo is closely attached to his Andalusian native soil, taking Spanish horsemanship to its highest level.

Accompanied by flamenco dancers and the sound of Spanish guitars Miguel Barrionuevo arouses grand emotions on his Andalusian horse. The highlight of his show will be his stallion´s dance on an oversized piano.

The preparations at the Plaza de Toros have started

First the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, then the Mallorca-Western-Festival

The entire American World Champion Equestrian Team will rev up once again for the Mallorca-Western-Festival! 200.000 US$ are at stake! The prize money is already deposited at the NRHA-USA.

The American national team, who will be competing among 21 nations on the occasion of the World Equestrian Games in Aachen for the title of World Champion and a money bag of 100.000 Euros, insist on giving it their all again barely three weeks later in the bullring of Palma de Mallorca. 200.000 US$ - the highest prize money ever in the history of the NRHA (National Reining Horse Association) for two Open Lawson Bronze Trophies – attract the best Reining-riders of the world to the island. No top rider can afford to miss this event, because the amount of the prize money will probably stir up the leading positions on the world rankings.

The entire American national team, consisting of the two „Two Million Dollar Riders“ Dell Hendricks and Tim McQuay and the two whizz riders Aaron Ralston and Matt Mills, are looking forward to the Festival. „Most of the time we are performing our sport in riding halls somewhere in the back of beyond the major cities. Non-riders would rather not wander off to such places. An event of this magnitude on a major holiday island such as Majorca at the peak season and all that in a bullring, that is a fantastic opportunity to fill even non-riders with enthusiasm about our sport. I am sure that all the competitors will make sure that they themselves and their horses give their absolute best „ says Dell Hendricks.

In the meantime also other creme-de-la-creme riders have announced their entry in the tournament. Among them the Australian Martin Larcombe, winner of several Lawson Trophies. At the moment he is training on the new CS-Ranch of Corinna Schumacher near Givrins. Just before the World Equestrian Games in Aachen he will give the Swiss team the final touches. Another highlight of the horseriding scene is the American Kelly Zweifel. With a breathtaking ride she won this year´s prestigious NRHA-Derby in the USA as the first woman ever.

From Belgium participates the top-class rider Bernard Fonck. Within as little as two years he has shed the feathers of the outsider turning into a superstar. This year he won the German NRHA-Derby.
It goes without saying that the present Reining World Champion, Derby Champion and „One Million Dollar Rider“ Shawn Flarida will be another top competitor.

The tournament will be evaluated by five judges: Maik Bartmann (Germany), Simone de Gues (Belgium) and Jan Boogaerts (Belgium). The two American judges Mike Mc Entire und Bob La Porta were appointed by the NRHA USA.

Mallorca Western Festival - Reining contests take place inside the Plaza de Toros!

More than 1000 tickets have already been sold… through our user friendly online booking system, which was launched just a couple of weeks ago.

Frank Costantini, a famous personality in the field of Reining, travelled to Palma de Majorca on Friday, July 07th, a visit that opened up new possibilities for the Mallorca Western Festival. Frank Costantini was taken aback by the very special atmosphere of the Plaza de Toros. "This is the most beautiful arena I have ever seen" he said.

"It would be such a pity not to have the reining competition held within the arena itself, with its impressive seating capacity for over 8.000 persons" he continued. After having talked to several riders, he decided that the reining competition would take place inside the Plaza de toros! Hence, a 50m x 30m reining arena will be set up indoor.

Frank Costantini, who wishes reining to become an Olympic discipline in 2012, sees the Mallorca Western Festival as a milestone to reach this goal.

Regarding the competition itself, Martin Wink (show manager) and Frank Costantini have selected the following patterns:

Friday Go Round:
Saturday Final:
Sunday contest "North America against the rest of the world":
NRHA Pattern 6
NRHA Pattern 9
NRHA Pattern 10

Reining Patterns 9 and 10: the main entrance to the Plaza de Toros will be sanded in order to help the riders reach necessary speed up to the first stop.

After Frank Costantini has announced this news, the following riders have confirmed their participance:

Dell Hendricks (1 Million Dollar Rider)

Mallorca Western festival from 22.-24 September

200.000 US$ added, the highest prizemoney ever in the history of the „NRHA-USA“ for a category 1 competition, attract the worldbest Reining-riders to the island!

(Palma de Mallorca) The Mallorca-Western-Festival is already a fixed date in the Top Reining Riders’ agendas. The American “One Million Dollar Riders” Dell Hendricks and the present Reining World Champion Shawn Flarida will be amongst the top competitors, while Tom McCutcheon, winner of the silver medal of the World Equestrian Games in Jerez in 2002, and Bryant Pace have also confirmed that they would be there.

In order to introduce the Mallorca-Western-Festival, Frank Lichte, manager of Event Consulting International, travelled personally to the meeting of the NRHA Board of Directors in Oklahoma City on April 3rd. The members held their breath, when Lichte mentioned the amount of the prizemoney: 200.000 US$ added will be handed to the competitors of only two Reining-Open Shows. With this prizemoney the Mallorca-Western-Festival is considered to be a new record in the history of the NRHA-USA!!! Never before was there such a high amount at stake for a category 1 competition, which admits horses of all ages.

All participants of the board meeting were excited about the idea of the „Mallorca Reining Trophy“. The first qualifying contest, which will be remunerated with 150.000 US$ added in the category Open (professionals), will take place on Friday, September 22nd. The Finals will be carried out on Saturday, September 23rd. Sunday will be under the motto: „North America against the rest of the world“. In this Open Reining contest the professionals will be awarded another 50.000 US$ added.

For the two Reining contests a special area of the size 38 x 76 meters will be built on the premises of the Plaza de Toros in Palma de Mallorca.

Partner of the Festival is the Nixdorf family, who are residing on Majorca. As Lichte explained: „ With a prizemoney of that magnitude the Nixdorf family is very proud to give the Reining sport and its professional riders the recognition they deserve. With the Mallorca-Western-Festival, the Nixdorfs want to contribute to Reining being a new disciplin at the Olympic Games in 2012.

After the Mallorca-Western-Festival was officially approved by the NRHA-Board of Directors, their President Dell Hendricks said: „I bet that every professional in this room, right now, is counting his available horses in his mind or he´s asking himself, where the hell he could find a first-class competitor until September.“ We are all excited about this fantastic opportunity to keep making the Reining sport more known in Europe. Naturally, with Event Consulting International and the Nixdorf family we are hoping to have found long-term partners.

The Festival will take place between Septembe 22nd-24th, peak season on Majorca. Then the population of the island increases to 1 million guests, while there are only 750.000 during low season. Among them there will be stars like Michael Douglas, Boris Becker and Claudia Schiffer. „People come to have fun“, Lichte says. The time-honoured Plaza de Toros in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, is the perfect stage to make the Western riding disciplin Reining known among an international public, riders and non-riders.

In order to attract especially the latter, there will be an additional entertainment programme with many workshops, Cutting demonstrations, freestyle dressage, the world-famous horse-show of Jean-François Pignon and an Indian Village for children. On Friday and Saturday, visitors can look forward to live-concerts under a Spanish sky.

At the 1st Mallorca Western Festival you can experience:

Reining - the royal class in western riding!
Reining stands for speed, agility, swiftness, elegance, and above all, great action. All these are characteristics found in an American Quarter horses , a line that comes from the proud Andalusian. In their saddle, world-class riders will be competing for the highly endowed "Mallorca Reining Trophy".

One Million Dollar Rider and Reining World Champion Shawn Flarida from Ohio/USA has already confirmed his participation!

Cutting - the most spectacular discipline in western riding.
It stems from the work of cowboys with cattle. Horse and rider only have two and a half minutes to "cut" an animal from the herd. The Cutting demonstration will be performed by Ute Holm. She became popular by her numerous international demonstrations.

Freestyle dressage - the world-famous horse show of Frenchman Jean-Francois Pignon.

A variety of workshops with professionals around all things equestrian.

An Indian village for children, with pony riding, handicraft, and face-painting.

International stars live in concert!
